tips to help lower your heating bill
With the recent heating fuel price increase, here are some ways to help lower your bill this winter:

  • Pay attention to the thermostat. Keeping the temperature a few degrees cooler can lower your heating bill and you can still be comfortable. It's a matter of personal preference but setting your thermostat to 68°F can help you save energy. Also, lower your thermostat while you're away from home during the day.
  • Seal heating ducts and insulate ducts that run through unheated spaces.
  • Check forced-air furnace filters regularly and clean or replace them as often as once each month during the heating season.
  • Drapes can add an extra layer of insulation. Blinds also can insulate, but they aren’t as effective. Keep your drapes closed at night, and on sunny days, open up the drapes and blinds to let in the sun’s free heat.
  • Don’t block registers, baseboards, radiators, or cold air returns. Air must circulate for maximum efficiency.

make your home more energy efficient
Higher fuel prices also affect our electricity rates. The following tips may help keep your electric bill affordable:

  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Compact fluorescents draw about one-quarter of the energy of an incandescent bulb and last up to 10 times longer.
  • Keep lights off in unoccupied rooms.
  • Use low-wattage bulbs when possible. Bright lights are often not needed in hallways or closets.
  • Clean light bulbs and fixtures since dirt can reduce light output by as much as 10 percent.
  • Remove unnecessary bulbs in track and recessed lighting. Positioned correctly, three bulbs can sometimes provide nearly the same light as four.
  • Install dimmers in areas where they make sense, such as the dining room and bedroom. The amount you dim equals your energy saved. For example, lights dimmed 15 percent reduces energy consumption up to 15 percent.
  • When working at a desk or workbench, use task lighting. Other lights in the room could be turned off or dimmed.
